About 90% of Canadians regularly eat seafood and fish, despite the high price of food
According to a recent survey, most Canadians continue to regularly consume seafood despite the high prices of food. The survey, conducted by the Agricultural Analysis Laboratory at Dalhousie University and the Angus Reid Institute, revealed that 87% of Canadians stated that they typically incorporate fish and other seafood into their meals.
The results published on Wednesday showed that while Canadians do not consume seafood daily, they do so on a weekly and monthly basis. About 45% of respondents in British Columbia and 39% in the Atlantic provinces reported eating seafood every week. The survey demonstrated that Quebec has the lowest weekly seafood consumption at 27.2%.
According to this survey, four out of every ten Canadians are willing to spend more on seafod. Experts suggest that Canadians primarily prefer fish such as haddock, trout, and salmon over other seafood products like lobster and shellfish. This is despite the fact that food prices in grocery stores in Canada have risen again in the past month, reaching 5.8% in September. Statistics Canada's recent data shows that the overall cost of fish, seafood, and other marine products increased by about 4.3% in the past month compared to September 2022. The price of fresh or frozen fish in September increased by 3.8% compared to the same month last year, while canned fish saw an 8.9% price increase in the past month compared to the previous year.
