Police search for driver after 4 pedestrians hurt in hit-and-run on TMU campus

The Metropolitan University of Toronto is asking the public to avoid the area after a hit-and-run left four people injured.

Toronto police say they are searching for a driver involved in a hit-and-run at a downtown Toronto university that injured four pedestrians Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. on Nelson Mandela Walk, located on the Metropolitan University of Toronto campus near the intersection of Young and Gerrard Streets East.

At the scene, officers found four pedestrians with reported injuries. Police said two of the injured were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Emergency services said one of the injured was taken to hospital with serious injuries, and the extent of the second person's injuries is not yet known.

Two other people were assessed by paramedics at the scene and did not require hospital treatment.

Toronto police said the vehicle did not remain at the scene after the collision and was last seen heading east on Gould Street toward the church.

Police also said the suspect vehicle is believed to be a green sedan with a cracked windshield.

The license plate number of the vehicle is not available at this time.

University asks students, staff and faculty to avoid the area

Shortly after the incident, the university issued a notice to students, staff and faculty that an “active police investigation into a vehicle accident” was underway near the campus and urged them to leave the area immediately.

“At this time, there is no impact to classes, labs or exams. Staff should continue to work,” the notice said.

The university also assured the university community that emergency services were on scene and that additional information would be released soon.

“A safe evacuation will be issued once the threat is resolved.”

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Toronto police at 416-808-5500 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
