Lawyer: British Columbia RCMP officer should be fired or resign immediately
An RCMP ethics lawyer says a Coquitlam, British Columbia, police officer accused of sending racist, misogynistic and homophobic group messages should be fired immediately or resign within 14 days.
“Ian Solon has severed his working relationship with the RCMP with this unacceptable behavior and his actions are inconsistent with the force’s organizational values,” said John McLachlan, the RCMP’s ethics lawyer.
In November, RCMP adjudicator Louise Morrell ruled that three Coquitlam officers – Solon, Mersad Mesbah and Philip Dick – committed misconduct by sending racist, misogynistic and homophobic group messages in group chats and on police computers.
Court documents show the allegations came to light after a colleague complained that his behavior was “appalling, racist and appalling.”
McLachlan told the jury that Solon’s actions and comments raised concerns about the administration of justice and the RCMP’s operations, demeaning some colleagues and dehumanizing “the most vulnerable members of society.”
Solon said he was proud to be a member of the RCMP and still feels that way, but he admitted he failed to live up to the force’s core expectations and values and “really regrets his actions.”
The three officers remain on suspended pay pending a final decision, with the RCMP seeking their dismissal.
