51st state? No thanks, says B.C. MLA after receiving U.S. senator’s ‘nonsense’ pitch
British Columbia MP Rejects Joining U.S. After Receiving Bizarre Proposal from U.S. Senator
Brennan Day, the opposition Conservative MP in British Columbia, said he went from frustrated to angry after receiving a letter from a Republican senator from Maine. The three-page letter, from Joseph Martin, suggested that four western Canadian provinces — British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba — could be admitted as full U.S. states after a referendum vote.
In his letter, Martin wrote that the proposal was “not annexation but acceptance,” and that its goal was to welcome those born under another flag but who want to live under the U.S. Constitution. He stressed that the plan was not “imperial daydreaming” and that the four provinces would have a chance to leave “failed ideologies behind.”
Day said the shocking part of the letter was the attack on Canadian institutions such as the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the parliamentary system, monarchy, bilingualism and multiculturalism, which Martin had called “political burdens.” Day added that Canada’s problem is not solved by losing its identity, but by working together, listening to each other and finding common ground.
He concluded by saying that the majority of Canadians are happy with the status quo and that no one looks to America and aspires to their way of life.
