The judge who ruled in favor of a New Brunswick property owner in an abatement lawsuit owns an apartment building.

Catherine Gregory, a Justice of the Court of King's Bench in New Brunswick, ruled in favor of a landlord in a case concerning significant rent increases phased in by provincial tenancy officers for tenants. Property records show that she owns a five-unit apartment building in Fredericton.
This situation doesn't automatically imply a conflict of interest in her ruling, but some legal experts believe that it comes close enough to suggest that another individual might have been better suited to handle the case.
"It's often very fact-specific when we think that line is crossed," Jula Hughes said regarding when a judge is in a conflict of interest. "But I think it's important to remember that we care about the appearance of impartiality as much as we care about actual impartiality."
