Brampton's mayor called for fines for people who make unnecessary calls to 911

As 911 operators face a significant increase in calls, Brampton's mayor called for fines for people who make unnecessary calls to 911. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown noted that about 40 percent of calls to the service in Peel Region were actually non-emergencies. "We've never seen this amount of unnecessary calls," he said. "These calls are increasing every year, and it's putting a lot of pressure on 911."

According to city officials, calls to 911 have increased by about 27 percent since 2022. In October, Police Chief Peel shared a recording of a caller telling an operator their TV was broken and not picking up any channels.

Brown believes that issuing fines could make some callers wonder if their call is truly an emergency. He believes that fines can change people's behavior.
