Stop selling Charged Sips caffeinated beverages from Canadian Panera Bread restaurants
Restaurant chain Panera Bread is removing its caffeinated drinks, called Charged Sips, from its Canadian restaurants after at least two deaths have been reported. A spokesperson for the company said that the restaurant chain plans to stop selling these types of drinks in Canada, but did not specify when.
The Associated Press also reported on Tuesday that the drinks are also being pulled from the US market. The Panera restaurant chain is currently facing at least two lawsuits over its Charged Sips drink.
One complaint alleges that Panera did not adequately warn customers about the drink's high caffeine content.
According to Panera's Caffeine Guide, which was last updated in January of this year, fruit-flavored drinks contain approximately 390 milligrams of caffeine. This means that a large cup of this drink contains more caffeine than a can of Red Bull and a can of Monster Energy.
In October 2023, Panera added a warning to Charged Sips drinks, saying the drink is not recommended for children, people sensitive to caffeine, or pregnant or breastfeeding women.
There are 9 Panera restaurants in Canada, all in Ontario. According to Panera's website, two flavors of Charged Sips are sold at Canadian locations.
