York Region health officials are investigating a "special" case of measles

York Region public health officials are investigating a "special" case of measles in a 30-year-old man who they said had no history of recent travel or contact with others who may have been ill.

The York Region Public Health Center announced that you may need to take preventive measures if you were in the following locations on the following dates and times: Health officials said in a statement: "If you were an infant under 6 months of age or are immunocompromised, contact York Region Public Health Center immediately because you may require preventive treatment."

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that is easily spread through the air. The measles virus can survive in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours.

Symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes, and a red rash. These symptoms usually appear 7 to 21 days after exposure. This is the fourth confirmed case of measles in Ontario, including a child who was recently hospitalized in Toronto. Measles is currently endemic in Europe, with more than 40,000 cases. According to health officials, everyone traveling abroad must provide proof that they have received two doses of the measles vaccine.
