General Motors is recalling 250,000 pickups in Canada due to a tailgate problem
General Motors is recalling 820,000 new pickups in North America because the rear doors can open unexpectedly.
The recall covers 2020 through 2024 model year trucks with power tailgates because water may leak into the outer tailgate switch and cause a short circuit while parked.
General Motors said it is aware of one reported minor injury incident and three minor property damage complaints related to the recall.
The recall covers about 570,000 trucks in the United States and 250,000 trucks in Canada. The recall is GM's largest recall of the year in the United States and one of the largest so far in 2024.
U.S. and Canadian regulators say that if the tailgate is opened, safe cargo can't fall out of the truck bed and onto the road while it's moving.
GM dealers will replace the external touchpad switch assemblies, but until replacement parts are available, vehicles at dealers and owners may disable the part. GM said the replacement parts use a new material that improves resistance to water penetration.
GM recommends that owners check the tailgate to make sure it is closed before driving.
GM said it is working quickly to fix the problem. The recall includes 2020-2023 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks and 2020-2024 heavy-duty versions of the same pickups with power tailgates.
General Motors launched an investigation in November after receiving complaints about the tailgate opening unintentionally, saying it had received 136 complaints about the tailgate opening unintentionally.
