Toronto was removed from the list of "world's best cities to live".
According to the Global Liveability Index 2024 report published by the Economist Information Unit (EIU), Toronto has dropped out of the world's top 10 livable cities for the first time in three years due to the dramatic increase in housing prices.
This city, which was once ranked 8th in this list, currently ranks 12th. The housing crisis, especially the increase in the price of buying and renting housing, has been the main cause of this rating fall.
Despite this drop, Canada is still in the top 10 cities in the world, as two other cities in the country, Calgary and Vancouver, are ranked fifth and seventh, respectively.
On the other hand, Vienna, the capital of Austria, has topped this list for the third year in a row and won the title of the most livable city in the world. Other Western European cities are also in the top ranks of this index.
In addition to the housing crisis, other factors have also contributed to Toronto's downgrade, including:
Destabilization: This factor includes social unrest and geopolitical tensions.
Infrastructure problems: These problems include congestion in the public transportation system and wear and tear on roads and bridges.
However, the EIU report also highlights some positives about Toronto, including:
Strong economy: As a global financial center, Toronto has a strong and dynamic economy.
Diverse culture: This city is known for its high cultural and demographic diversity.
Access to education: Toronto has a number of world-renowned universities and educational institutions.
Overall, Toronto's drop in the Global Liveability Index reflects the challenges the city is facing. However, this city still has many strengths and can regain its place among the most livable cities in the world by addressing these challenges.
