Doubling the costs of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Vancouver
According to the provincial government's latest financial reports, the cost of hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Vancouver has doubled to between $483 million and $581 million. This increase in costs is attributed to the allocation of more matches in this city as well as the update of FIFA requirements.
Based on the financial breakdowns outlined, the City of Vancouver is expected to cover roughly half of the costs, which include public safety, FIFA fan festivals and other city services. The provincial government will also cover capital costs to upgrade BC Place Stadium as well as operational costs for the duration of the tournament.
The provincial government stated that the World Cup will attract more than one million visitors, in addition to an increase of one billion dollars in tourist spending, as well as an increase of one billion dollars in the province's gross domestic product.
