Northern Ontario police shoot man carrying shotgun on Highway 11/17
A Special Investigations Unit vehicle is seen in this file photo. The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating an incident in which a police officer near Thunder Bay, Ont., injured a man who fired a shotgun at a police vehicle.
The 58-year-old man was found walking on Highway 11/17 about 30 kilometres west of Thunder Bay on Pebblestone Road at 2:18 p.m. Thursday.
911 callers reported the man was carrying a shotgun, according to a statement from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
“Officers responded to the call and located the man,” the SIU said.
“The man discharged his weapon and aimed it at the police vehicle. The police officer was not hit. An officer fired at the man.”
Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and transported the man to the hospital, where he is being treated for a serious injury.
“No police officers were injured,” the statement continued.
“There is currently one officer suspect and one officer witness identified in this case. Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.”
