Psychotherapy and counseling services are exempt from taxation
Some psychotherapy and counseling services in Canada are now tax-exempt to make mental health care more affordable for Canadians.
Some psychotherapists and counselors are no longer required to charge Goods and Services Tax (GST) or Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on their services, the Canada Revenue Agency announced in a news release.
This tax-free capability applies to individuals who are licensed by a provincial body to provide psychotherapy or counseling services.
Those professionals who work without a regulatory body in the province, but who have credentials that meet the licensing requirements in the regulated province, are not required to collect GST/HST.
These new rules apply everywhere in Canada, except for Quebec, which has its own tax rules.
