Possibility of importing electricity to Ontario due to extreme heat
Ontario's electricity system operator said the province must have enough electricity to meet growing demand this year and next, which may even force it to import power during extreme heat.
In its 18-month outlook report, the operator said that under normal weather conditions, Ontario generates enough electricity. But in the event of extreme heat, there may be a need to import up to 2,000 MW of electricity from other regions, especially in August and summer 2025.
Nuclear power provides more than half of Ontario's electricity, and during the 18-month outlook, some units are being rebuilt and others are being retired. The operator predicts that Ontario's electricity demand in This year, it will increase by one percent and next year by nearly three percent. The increase in demand is partly due to the increase in economic activities, but it is also due to large industrial projects such as electric car battery factories and electric arc furnaces.
