'I’m not proud of it': Jason Kelce apologizes after video shows him spiking a cellphone after fan used a homophobic slur
Jason Kelsey apologized on ESPN's "Monday Night Countdown" for a video that captured a "tense" moment between him and a fan. The video shows an interaction between Kelsey and a fan outside the stadium where the game between Penn State and Ohio State was being played. Kelsey was in the game as part of the Pat McAfee Contest hosted by ESPN's "College GameDay" program.
In the video, a fan can be heard disrespecting Kelsey's brother, Travis Kelsey, who is in a relationship with Taylor Swift, using a homophobic slur. Jason Kelsey immediately turns around, grabs the fan's phone and slams it to the ground.
Kelsey then throws the same homophobic slur back at the other party.
"I think everyone saw what happened this week on social media," he said on the show. I am not happy with what happened and I am not proud of it. In a tense moment, I responded with hate with hate, and I don't think that's productive."
Kelsey added that he tries to live by the "Golden Rule" of treating others with respect and dignity and will continue to do so, although he failed to live up to that principle over the weekend.
In a postgame news conference Saturday, Penn State coach James Franklin said he wished it hadn't happened.
"I wanted her to have a great experience," he said of Kelsey. I saw something I'm not proud of and I wish it hadn't happened."
Penn State Police said in a statement to CNN that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
