Harris and Trump tie in Dixville Notch midnight vote to kick off Election Day
Harris and Trump were tied by three votes in the midnight poll in Dicksville Notch, New Hampshire, which opens Election Day.
Dicksville Notch is one of the first places in America to announce the results of its presidential vote, a tradition that has continued since 1960. This small district is located near the Canadian border, and this year four Republicans and two independents were on the ballot.
Every year in Dicksville Notch, all eligible voters go to the polls simultaneously at midnight. This tradition symbolizes the importance of participation in elections and shows the importance of voting for many people interested in politics.
"It's a civics lesson for the country," said Les Otten, a voter and local developer. "If we can show people that voting is an important part of their rights as American citizens, maybe that's what we're aiming for."
Otten, a longtime Republican, cast his vote for Harris, arguing that commitment to one person is against the principles of democracy.
Voters also weighed in on the governor's race between former Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte and former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig.
