Some Canadians are getting climate change relief this week
The government is sending the second batch of Climate Action Incentive Payment (CAIP) to Canadians this week. Payments will start on October 13. While these payments were typically made on the 15th of each month, the date has changed to a Monday.
CAIP is a tax-exempt amount provided to help individuals and families offset the costs of the carbon tax. It is available to residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, and Ontario.
Residents of New Brunswick will receive double the amount in October 2023, as they did not receive their payments in July. The fourth quarterly payment for eligible Canadians is set for January 2024. The federal government has outlined the payments on its website as follows:
Alberta:
- Single individuals: $193
- Individuals with a spouse or common-law partner: $96.50
- For each child under 19 years of age: $48.25
Manitoba:
- Single individuals: $132
- Individuals with a spouse or common-law partner: $66
- For each child under 19 years of age: $33
Ontario:
- Single individuals: $122
- Individuals with a spouse or common-law partner: $61
- For each child under 19 years of age: $3050
To be eligible for the upcoming CAIP payment, you must meet the following conditions:
- Be a resident of Canada at the start of October 2023.
- Reside in one of the provinces covered by CAIP since October 1.
- Be at least 19 years of age.
If you are under 19, you must meet the following conditions:
- Be married or have a common-law partner, or have had one in the past.
- Be a parent with dependent children.
New residents of Canada can also apply for CAIP but will need to complete certain forms and mail them to their nearest tax center.
