Conservative victory in the Toronto-St. Paul by-election
In the Toronto-St. Paul by-election vote, the Conservatives scored a significant victory over the Liberals. Conservative candidate Don Stewart won with 42.1 percent of the vote over Leslie Church, who got 40.5 percent.
Leslie Church, who served as Chief of Staff to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, was the Liberal Party candidate. Stewart, who is a financial and marketing expert, was also nominated by the Conservative Party of Canada. Amrit Parhar was also a candidate of the New Democrat Party. Among them, Parhar got 4044 votes or 10.9% of the votes and Christian Kolis, the candidate of the Green Party, got 1059 votes or 2.9% of the votes.
The election follows the resignation of former Liberal MP Caroline Bennett, who held the seat for more than 25 years and was recently appointed ambassador to Denmark.
