Canada’s divorce rate is the lowest in fifty years, but fewer people are getting married in the first place
The divorce rate in Canada has been decreasing in recent years and has reached the lowest rate in the last fifty years. The divorce rate in Canada in 2020 is equal to 5.6 divorces per thousand married couples, in other words, this year, out of every thousand Couples, 5.6 couples got divorced, which is the lowest number since 1973.
In 1991, the divorce rate was 12.7 out of every 1,000 Canadian couples, the Weiner Institute, which researches the family, said, citing data from Statistics Canada. The marriage rate among Canadians has also declined. In fact, only 44% of people over 15 in Canada were married in 2021, compared to 54% in 1991. It should be noted that since 2015, the marriage age in Canada has been set at 16.
Another point is that the rate of separation of people who live together but without marriage is not counted in this statistic. In 2021, one out of every five Canadian couples (22.7%) lived together in a common-law manner, and the separation of these people is not recorded in the divorce statistics.
