Air Canada and facial recognition at airports
Air Canada, as one of the pioneers of air transportation in Canada, has announced the implementation of facial recognition technology at the airport gates. This technology is supposed to make the boarding process easier and faster and will be used for the first time on Air Canada's domestic flights from Vancouver International Airport.
Details of facial recognition technology
Air Canada allows volunteer passengers to enter the plane by uploading a photo of their face and scanning their passport in the company's application, without the need to provide physical identification documents such as passports or certificates.
The technology was previously piloted at Maple Leaf lounges in Toronto, Calgary, and San Francisco, and is now ready to expand to other Canadian airports.
Similar experiences in the world
As of 2021, some Delta Air Lines passengers at Atlanta and Detroit airports have been able to pass security checks and board planes using only facial biometrics.
In 2023, Germany's Frankfurt Airport will also expand this technology to all airlines, so that passengers can go through the check-in process to the gate with facial recognition without the need for physical documents.
The future of air travel with biometric technologies
With the launch of this project, Air Canada has taken a big step towards keeping pace with modern air transport technologies. This method not only reduces the waiting time of passengers, but also increases the safety and efficiency of the boarding process.
