The federal government has announced an increase in financial support for foreign students

What has been announced is that Canada's immigration minister, Mark Miller, plans to require foreign students who intend to study in this country to double the amount of financial resources required. He has also threatened to reduce the number of visas in provinces or territories that do not help students with housing or institutions that he believes should be closed.

These measures have been adopted in order to protect foreign students from "unscrupulous" employers and institutions that leave them alone to meet the living expenses in Canada and abuse them. Starting next year, students will have to show that, in addition to travel and tuition costs, they can afford at least $20,635, double the current amount of $10,000.

Miller has stated that these changes were made to prevent abuse of foreign students and it would be wrong to consider them as the main culprits of the housing crisis. He expects educational institutions to only accept students they can accommodate or help them find off-campus housing.

He has stated that if the provinces and territories can't take these measures, the federal government will, and that won't sit well with them. It also announced that the government is reviewing the number of work hours allowed for students in Canada, and this may be a maximum of 20 hours per week to prevent more people from entering Canada with the goal of working without focusing on their studies. Also, canceling the work visa policy for international students after graduation is also on the agenda.
