A growing shortage of dermatologists in Ontario
Ontario seems to be struggling with dermatologists. They are said to have to wait months or travel several hours to their area to see a dermatologist. The Ontario Ministry of Health says every part of Ontario has a dermatologist, and the ministry is trying to increase the number of doctors now and in the coming years.
Previous statistics from this ministry show that the number of dermatologists in the province increased by 5.5% between 2018 and 2021, from 238 to 251 people. In 2021, there were approximately 14 million people living in Ontario. According to these numbers, there should be a dermatologist for every 55,000 people in this province.
Researches believe that the government does not support private skin clinics in any way. Also, for there to be more in the triage area, they need to visit more as work, they need support.
This problem is not unique to Ontario. Experts believe that the majority of dermatologists in the country are actually in metropolitan Toronto. Provinces are being asked to create more areas in residency programs that want dermatologists to reduce this rate.
