"Patient's previous warnings were unfounded: Infection risk at Toronto gynecologist's office leads to clinic closure"

Patients of a Toronto gynecologist linked to the risk of infection from unsterilized equipment said they had reported negative experiences to authorities years before the reports. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) confirmed that it had received multiple complaints about Dr. Esther Park.

Milanta complained to the CPSO in April 2021 that Dr. Park asked her personal questions in an open room during an examination, refused to let her use her clothes as a cover, and performed a painful internal exam without her consent.

The CPSO’s response included recommendations for Park to improve professional communication and respect patient privacy.

Previous complaint history:

The CPSO said it had previously received complaints that Park “made patients feel rushed or did not provide complete information.”

Park’s medical license was suspended in December 2024, but her clinic remained open until April 2025.

Other patient reactions:

Another former patient, Sandra Cole, stood outside Park's office and demanded accountability, demanding a more serious investigation.

Dozens of other patients have come forward with similar experiences since the CBC's initial report.

Legal options:

Medical lawyer Christina Maitland advised patients to seek legal action if they are unhappy with the CPSO's decisions.

Toronto Public Health said the infection control issues were resolved in October 2024, but some patients are still suffering the negative effects of their experiences.

Conclusion:
Milanta described the incident as "the most traumatic experience of her life" and stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the medical system. The CPSO said it would continue its investigations even after doctors retire or close their practices.
