8 tough months of fighting the wildfires in British Columbia will not end soon.
After a grueling eight months battling the devastating wildfires in British Columbia, Chief Firefighter Sonia Lorkus was hoping for a break. But with so many fires continuing to burn, he worries it won't be long before the flames are fought again.
"It feels like we haven't had enough time to recover and get ready again because it's happening again," said Lorkus, who lives in Fort Nelson, British Columbia.
According to the latest statistics from the Canadian Forest Fire Centre, there are currently 92 active fires in British Columbia and another 54 in Alberta that remain from last year. Experts say that a number of others are also active in the northwestern regions of the country.
Fires that burn underground in winter are sometimes called "zombie fires" or "winter fires." Often, they are only visible to the naked eye as small plumes of smoke rising into the winter sky.
