2024 has been a nerve-wracking year for plane travel. How safe is it really?
The year 2024 has fueled many concerns about flight safety with a series of aviation accidents, some of which have been called unprecedented tragedies. Three separate incidents involving South Korean, Canadian and Azerbaijani airlines have drawn global attention to flight safety over the past week.
However, statistics show that the risk of death or injury on commercial flights is very low. According to data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), in 2023, only 30 incidents were recorded among millions of commercial flights, which equates to one incident in every 1.26 million flights.
Even with these incidents recorded, research shows that the probability of death on a commercial flight is significantly lower than in many everyday activities such as driving or even using an escalator. According to experts, despite some recent concerns and accidents, flying is still considered one of the safest modes of transportation in the world.
At the same time, the occurrence of these tragic accidents is a reminder that the aviation industry cannot take safety for granted and efforts should always be made to improve standards and investigate the causes of accidents.
