Two more beluga whales died in Marineland

With the loss of two more whales in Marineland, the total number of whale deaths since 2019 has reached 17. "Independent autopsies confirm that both belugas died of stomach torsion after medical efforts," Marineland said in a statement.

In the continuation of this statement, all whales are under constant and weekly supervision of government officials and are under daily care of domestic veterinarians and foreign consultants. The reality is that all animals eventually die for some reason, whether in the wild or in captivity. Since 2019, 16 beluga whales and one killer whale have died in this park. A bottlenose dolphin, a harbor seal, a gray seal and two California sea lions also died during that time, according to the province.

Marineland has stated on its website that it has a "strong track record" in providing for the welfare of its animals and that their health and well-being is a priority. Last summer, there were 37 belugas in the park, with 12 of the beluga deaths occurring over a two-year period. A beluga named Ikura dies on October 24, 2019, followed by 10 other belugas and a beluga named Bull on November 23, 2021.

The province's four-year investigation into Marineland remains shrouded in mystery, with officials refusing to release details of the investigation or how the animals died.

Marineland was recently found guilty under provincial animal cruelty laws for caring for three young black bears. The park housed three bears in cramped quarters with little access to water and no climbing structures.
