The CRA fired 232 employees for falsely claiming benefits during the pandemic
In an important development, the Canada Revenue Agency has fired more than 200 of its employees. These individuals have been charged with improperly receiving financial benefits from the Canada Response to Covid-19 Support Plan (CERB). During the pandemic, the plan paid $2,000 a month to people who lost their jobs due to public health restrictions. Employees accused of improperly receiving these benefits are fired and required to repay the funds.
So far, 133 cases have been confirmed as valid claims, while about 235 cases are still under investigation. The agency has identified a total of 600 employees for further investigation, some of whom were students or temporary employees. Investigations are ongoing to ensure the correct distribution of benefits, and Canada Revenue Agency believes these measures are necessary to maintain the integrity of the support system and prevent financial abuse.
