One in four Canadians still struggling to make ends meet

New federal data shows a quarter of Canadians are struggling to make ends meet, and although the pressure is easing from its peak at the end of last year, the Prairie provinces and marginalized communities across the country are faring the worst.

The figures come from the latest results of the Canadian Social Survey, a quarterly study by Statistics Canada that tracks key indicators of quality of life across the country. Survey participants were asked to rate the difficulties their households faced in meeting their financial needs in the past year, and the results indicated widespread challenges in doing so.

Across the country, 26.8 per cent of Canadians reported that it was difficult or very difficult to meet their financial needs in the past 12 months, up from 24.5 per cent in the second quarter of 2022 and after a peak of 34.8 per cent at the end of Year. It increased last year.
