"You might be surprised to hear about the volume of work that artificial intelligence is currently performing at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. Dr. Mohammad Momdani from Unity Health Toronto stated, "In our hospital, we have a saying that goes, 'AI doesn't replace doctors, but doctors who use AI replace those who don't.'" In a rapidly changing world surrounded by technology, employees across various sectors, from finance to legal and coding, must now learn how to harness artificial intelligence or accept the risk of losing their jobs. Armineh Yalnizyan, an economist from Ottawa, emphasized, "It's essential for employees to take AI seriously. If you haven't done it before, it's better to start learning so that someone else who has mastered AI doesn't replace you." Unity Health Toronto has a dedicated team for practical AI applications and has introduced over 50 innovations since 2017.
Dr. Momdani continued, "We have algorithms running every hour that monitor patients. This reduces human workload by 80%. Tasks that usually take two to four hours a day for multiple individuals are reduced to less than 15 minutes. In an era of chronic labor shortages in healthcare, this technology helps healthcare workers focus more on patients and, at the same time, save lives."
The latest report from Statistics Canada in 2020 indicates that 40% of Canadian workers are at a high to medium risk of job displacement. Dr. Momdani stated that St. Michael's Hospital can potentially reduce its workforce by 20% to 30% through means like natural language processing for data analysis and information gathering. According to experts, everyone, especially the younger generation, should be knowledgeable about technology, how to use it, and work with it, especially in a world dominated by technology."
