Squirrels caused 80 outages in Toronto last year: hydro officials

Toronto Hydro announced that squirrels were the main cause of power outages in Toronto in 2023. These curious creatures have caused power outages by approaching electrical equipment.

According to the email sent by this company, squirrels caused about 80 power outages last year. Raccoons accounted for 13 blackouts and birds for 30 blackouts.

"Every outage has a unique story, but wildlife-related outages are resolved in less than two hours on average," said Toronto Electric Company spokesperson Daniel McNeill.

The spokesperson of this company also confirmed that last Wednesday's blackout in Toronto was also caused by a squirrel coming into contact with a power pole. The several-hour outage caused power outages in areas between Rosedale Valley Avenue to Gardiner Expressway and Church Avenue to Don Valley Parkway.

The Toronto Electric Company says it takes steps to prevent animals from coming into contact with electrical equipment. These measures include periodic patrolling of facilities and equipment to keep animals away, as well as installing guards and covers on equipment that is more exposed to contact with animals.

"While all wild animals can cause disruption to our power distribution system, these measures will help keep animals safe and power connected," Mr McNeil concluded.
