Canada is testing an emergency alert system today

It seems that Canada is set to test its emergency alert system today, Thursday. In Quebec, this test is scheduled for 1:55 PM. It is expected that at that time, TV and radio broadcasts will be interrupted with an alert, and mobile phones will receive a message. According to officials, the alerts will clearly indicate that this is a test, and for the first time, a survey will be conducted afterward.

The purpose of this exercise is to identify the challenges faced by people with disabilities in understanding and interacting with emergency alerts. The emergency alert system is used when there is a need to inform the public of an immediate situation. Examples of this include Amber Alerts, the presence of an active shooter, or the imminent arrival of a dangerous weather system.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) mandates that this test be conducted annually in May or November. This test is used to confirm the effectiveness and reliability of the system and to increase awareness. It is also expected that this test will be conducted at 12:55 PM in Ontario, 10:55 AM in Newfoundland and Labrador, 10:55 AM in New Brunswick, 12:55 PM on Prince Edward Island, and 1:55 PM in Nova Scotia.
