The nine-acre state-of-the-art engine maintenance and testing facility is expected to help position Calgary as a world-class aerospace hub.
WestJet CEO Alexis von Hohensbrosch said the partnership brings this critical operation back to Canada.
“(It) provides greater efficiency and cost certainty for a critical part of our operations, while demonstrating our commitment to improving competitiveness and supporting the Alberta economy.”
“We are proud to be partnering with Lufthansa Technik. This is a tremendous moment for WestJet, our guests, WestJeters, the communities of Western Canada and our suppliers.”
The facility will specialize in the LEAP-1B engines that power the airline’s Boeing 737 fleet.
All engine overhauls will continue to be performed at Lufthansa Technik’s main facility in Hamburg, Germany, and the company’s joint venture in Wrocław, Poland.
Lufthansa Technik says the Calgary facility will allow for “fast shop visits.”
“This is a contract that underscores Lufthansa Technik’s leading position in supporting new generation engines. We value our extensive experience and our ability to serve as a reliable long-term partner for WestJet’s strong confidence.”
The contract is set to last 15 years and will create 160 full-time jobs at the repair facility.
Approximately 170 jobs will be supported during construction.
