The UNB thrower lowers the hammer with a unique prosthetic
University of New Brunswick rowing javelin thrower Kimberly "Kim" Dixon recently drew attention with a unique prosthetic. Dixon's prosthesis, made by Prosthetics of Canada, allows him to throw the hammer with the same power and accuracy as a healthy thrower.
Dixon lost her left arm at the elbow in 2018 after being diagnosed with breast cancer. However, he did not retire from the sport and looked for ways to continue throwing the boulder.
Dixon contacted a Canadian prosthetics company and asked them to design a prosthesis for him that he could use to throw boulders. The company created a custom prosthesis that allows Dixon to throw the hammer the same way he would with his natural hand.
Dixon has made significant progress since receiving his new prosthesis. He participated in the 2023 Canadian National Bouldering Championships and was selected for the Canadian National Team for the 2023 Bouldering World Championships.
Dixon says his new prosthesis has helped him regain his confidence in throwing the boulder. "It's a real blessing," he says. "I can throw again and compete with the best in the world."
Dixon is an inspiration to many people who are facing physical challenges. He shows that with determination and perseverance, anything is possible.
