Simultaneous disruptions in Canadian ports generate economic information

Business groups have expressed concerns about the broader effects of new disruptions to the transportation sector as Canada faces the closure of two of its largest ports.

Denis Darry, president of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said the simultaneous closure of the ports of Vancouver and Montreal comes at a challenging time, as businesses face year-end pressures and the U.S. election results further emphasize the need to be seen as a reliable trading partner. has done

Darry adds that hundreds of millions of dollars in goods are not being moved because of strikes, and this latest round of shutdowns shows there must be a better way to resolve contract disputes.

Pascal Chan of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce says the simultaneous disruptions at these ports means Canada has effectively announced to the world that it is "closed for business."

Chan, who is the chamber's senior director of transportation, infrastructure and construction, said in a statement that the last thing Canadians struggling with the high cost of living need is more business disruption.

The shutdowns follow the shutdown of Canada's two main railways in August and government intervention to resolve the problem, and disruptions at British Columbia ports and the St. Lawrence Canal last year.
