Sailor dead after a boat capsized in Halifax area: Royal Canadian Navy
The Royal Canadian Navy has announced that a sailor has died after a boat capsized in Bedford Bay.
The navy says the two sailors were using a rigid-hulled inflatable boat in the bay, located in the Halifax area, when the boat capsized around 10 p.m. Friday.
The Royal Canadian Navy said that the Halifax Joint Rescue Coordination Center dispatched two Canadian Coast Guard vessels to the rescue and pulled both sailors from the water.
The sailors were treated by paramedics and taken to a hospital in Halifax, but one of the sailors could not be revived despite efforts to revive him.
The second sailor was treated and released from the hospital, and military police are investigating the incident.
Commodore Jacob French, commander of Canada's Atlantic Fleet, said the navy is deeply saddened by the loss and that the sailor's sacrifice and service to his country will never be forgotten.
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston called the news "deeply saddening" in a statement posted on social media, saying his thoughts were with the sailor's family, friends and colleagues.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also paid tribute to the sailor on social media on Saturday night.
"A profound loss for the Royal Canadian Navy. Their service and sacrifice for Canada will not be forgotten," he wrote in his post.
