Canada in shock as Conservative MP switches to Liberal Party
Chris D’Entremont, a Conservative MP from Nova Scotia and former member of the Conservative Party, announced on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, that he has joined the Liberal Party.
This marks the first time since the April elections that a Canadian MP has switched parties.
D’Entremont stated that the new Liberal government budget addresses the priorities of his constituency, such as strengthening infrastructure and promoting economic growth.
Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the move, saying, “This decision is extremely valuable and important for our country.”
Why does this matter?
The Liberal government does not hold a majority, and gaining even a single MP from the opposition strengthens the government’s ability to pass budgets and legislation.
This development highlights how party-switching by MPs can have a significant impact on policies and the country’s future.
