
Manitoba man dead after medical emergency in RCMP cruiser: IIU
A man in Manitoba has died after experiencing a medical emergency in the backseat of a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) cruiser in the St. Laurent area.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the incident. According to a notice released on Monday, RCMP officers stopped a vehicle on Highway 6 in the rural municipality of St. Laurent on Friday afternoon.
The officers arrested two men on unrelated matters and placed them in the back of the police cruiser.
According to the IIU, one of the men suffered a medical emergency shortly after being taken into custody. The officers immediately called emergency medical services and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
At this point, the man was unresponsive and had no pulse.
When emergency responders arrived, they continued CPR for another 45 minutes, but the man passed away.
The IIU is currently investigating the incident and has requested the appointment of a civilian monitor for the case, as it involves a death.
