Three people, including two children, have died after a fire broke out at an apartment building in Hamilton early Sunday morning, according to the Hamilton Fire Chief.
The fire broke out at a high-rise apartment building at 35 Brook Street, near John and Catherine streets, shortly after 10:30 a.m.
Images posted on social media from the scene show heavy black smoke billowing from the building.
A total of eight people were taken to hospital and two others were treated at the scene, Hamilton Fire Chief David Cunliffe told reporters Sunday afternoon.
It is not yet clear how the deadly fire started.
Traffic in the area is affected by the fire and Hamilton Police are asking people to avoid the area.
