Anita Anand supports Greenland's sovereignty; Washington once again talks about annexing the territory
OTTAWA — Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand has stressed the sovereignty of the Danish territory in response to fresh U.S. comments about its desire to annex it.
Anand spoke with her Danish counterpart, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, on Tuesday and said she conveyed “Canada’s support for the fundamental importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The comments come after U.S. President Donald Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his special envoy for Greenland. Landry said the mission’s goal is to “make Greenland part of the United States,” a move that has reignited tensions over Washington’s interest in the Danish territory.
Anand wrote in a message on social media:
“Today I spoke with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen to reiterate Canada’s support for the fundamental importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity. I also reaffirmed our friendship and partnership as members of the Arctic region.”
The Canadian foreign minister announced that he plans to travel to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, early next year to open a Canadian consulate there. He also said that Denmark is an important partner of Canada through the Arctic Council and the NATO defense pact.
Anand said earlier this month that it is time for NATO to focus more on securing the Arctic region, noting that Canada has played its part in securing Europe for decades.
Meanwhile, Jeff Landry said on Tuesday that the United States “does not intend to conquer anyone” and “does not want to take over anyone’s country.”
