Is this home the happiest Christmas home in Hamilton?
In an east Hamilton neighborhood, there's a house that catches the eye of every passerby during the holiday season.
A house on Dunsmure Avenue, east of Ottawa Street N, stands out in the middle of a typical neighborhood with a gingerbread-like appearance and a yard full of inflatable Christmas decorations.
Kevin Greenhalgh, who has lived in this house for ten years, bought some inflatable decorations about seven years ago and decided to install them in the yard.
A large collection of inflatable decorations
At first it only had eight or nine decorations, but now it has almost 50, many of which light up at night. Greenhalgh says she's never been a big fan of Christmas and considered herself a bit grumpy, but with time and grandchildren, her perspective has changed.
His greatest joy is seeing the reaction of children when he passes the house:
"The kids are really having fun, running around, taking pictures and having a lot of fun."
Neighbors and help with electricity
Neighbor Stephen Elliott says he passes the house almost every day and seeing the lights puts everyone in a good mood:
“It's really amazing to see so many lights and it gets everyone in a festive mood. "People are constantly stopping to take pictures."
Her child, Nove Elliott, added:
"It's so interesting that the decorations change almost every day."
Greenhalgh moves the inflatables around and pulls some out of storage for variety.
He did not disclose the cost of electricity, but has a voluntary contribution fund that neighbors can contribute to. Some neighbors have also donated inflatable decorations.
Find the best decorations throughout the year
Greenhalgh is always on the lookout for good inflatables from flea markets, auctions and yard sales. His current favorite is a large snow globe and gingerbread house, which the children really like.
Due to the limited space in the yard, part of the decorations are kept in the warehouse, and with the neighbor's permission, some large decorations are placed on their driveway.
Long effort to decorate
It takes about 40 hours to set up the decorations, and Greenhalgh begins preparations in November. He and his family install the collection with the help of each other.
Greenhalgh says:
"Kids love it, adults also come and take pictures. They even bring their dogs and want to take pictures, no problem."
When asked how many years he plans to continue this big holiday show, he replied:
"I will continue as long as I can."
