Power restored to thousands of customers in Atlantic region after strong winds over the weekend
HALIFAX — As Atlantic Canada recovers from the weekend’s severe winds, thousands of homes and businesses remain without power as of Sunday.
Ahead of the weekend, Environment Canada had issued weather warnings for all Atlantic provinces, warning of winds of up to 100 kilometres per hour in some areas.
At one point, Nova Scotia Power said more than 186,000 customers were without power, but that number had dropped to about 1,300 by late Sunday.
In New Brunswick, NB Power reported 577 customers were still without power, down from 54,000 homes and businesses on Saturday.
In Newfoundland, Newfoundland Power did not report any power outages as of late Sunday, but Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro said about 1,100 customers south of Baie Verte were still without power.
Officials are urging residents to stay away from downed power lines, as they may still be live and pose a serious risk.
This report was first published by The Canadian Press on December 21, 2025.
