A Wisconsin man who faked his own death this summer so he could leave his family and flee to Europe has told authorities how he did it, according to the police chief.

Ryan Borgwardt has been in contact with authorities since Nov. 11, and after three months of absence, he said in a video sent to the police chief's office that he was in his apartment in Europe and was doing well. He said in this video: "I am healthy and safe, I have no problem." I hope it works."

He told the authorities that he fled because of "personal issues". The police chief did not elaborate.

Borgwardt said he drove 50 miles from his home in Watertown to Green Lake, capsized his kayak and dropped his cell phone in the lake, then took an inflatable boat to shore. He said that he chose this lake because of its depth (72 meters deep). Then, he rode an electric bike about 110 kilometers to Madison, and from there he traveled by bus to Detroit and then to Canada and from there he flew to his destination in Eastern Europe.

The police chief said Borgordt could be charged with obstructing the investigation, but no charges have yet been filed. He also said that Borgordt's return home depends on his "free will".

Borgordt's biggest concern about returning is the community's reaction. "He thought his plan would go well, but it didn't go the way he wanted," the police chief said.

Initially investigated as a possible drowning death, Borgordt was found to have faked his death to date a woman in Uzbekistan after police discovered he had received a new passport three months ago. to visit

Police discovered that a laptop belonging to Borgordt contained a digital trail of his plans to travel to Europe and try to mislead the investigation. It was also revealed that he had taken out a $375,000 life insurance policy in January, although it was for his family and not himself.

After checking the numbers and emails on the laptop, police officials eventually contacted Borgordt through a Russian-speaking woman. It is not yet clear whether this woman is the same person from Uzbekistan or not.
