Rescuing reindeer from a barbed wire fence in southern Alberta
A man from Southern Alberta and his son will surely make it to Santa's nice list this year by freeing a young deer trapped in a barbed wire fence.
Reis Wynes and his son Sawyer came across the young deer on Wednesday in Kananaskis. The father and son, who live near the village of Millarville, are accustomed to wildlife sightings.
Sawyer said, "The deer's leg was caught in the fence. It kept pulling on its leg and we could hear the fence breaking."
If no one had come to save the deer, it likely would have died, but these two took a moment to find a way to free the animal.
Reis said, "We thought if we went back home to get the tools we needed to free the deer, it would take 20 minutes to go and 20 minutes to come back, which would take too long. But my son thought we might have some tools we could use."
Although the deer was young, it was large and could be dangerous. Reis handed his phone to his son and asked him to film the rescue.
Reis said, "The young deer was whimpering, and I kind of told it that if it didn't kick me, I would get it out of the fence. Eventually, I freed the deer with caution." In the video, the deer can be seen pausing for a few moments before running off. It hesitates and looks back at its rescuers before returning to the wild.
