New scam in British Columbia from people on the pretext of a broken phone
In recent news, a wave of emerging scams has been making headlines in British Columbia. Scammers use a trick called the "broken phone scam" to trap citizens. In this method, victims receive a text message from someone posing as a family member or acquaintance, claiming that they have lost or damaged their cell phone and are in desperate need of money to buy a new phone. The scammer provides an alternate phone number and asks for funds to pay for repairs or bills. In one case, victims in the North Vancouver area lost a total of $8,768.
