Launching an online anti-bike theft tool across the province of British Columbia
In a new move, the province of British Columbia is expanding Project 529, an online tool to fight bike theft, across the province. The program registers bikes and their owners' personal information in an online database, allowing officers to quickly return stolen bikes to their original owners. The project, first piloted in 2015 in partnership with the Vancouver Police Department, has grown to become the largest online bike registration system in the world.
Vancouver Police Chief Adam Palmer praised the positive impact Project 529 has had on bike theft in his city. He announced that since the introduction of this tool, the number of stolen bicycles in the city has decreased by 66%. The province has also announced a three-year financial commitment to expand this database to all police departments in British Columbia.
