Latest developments from Canada's federal election: campaign promises, new policies and accusations of foreign interference

Tuesday, March 25, 2025, was the third day of campaigning for Canada’s federal election, which is scheduled to be held on April 28. Leaders of the major parties across the country were campaigning, announcing new promises and policies.

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Pouliève:

At a news conference in Vaughan, Ontario, Pouliève announced that he would maintain current drug and dental programs if he wins the election. “We will maintain these programs and no one will lose them,” he stressed. He also promised to eliminate the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on new homes up to $1.3 million, which could save buyers up to $65,000.

Liberal Party Leader Mark Carney:

Carney outlined his party’s defense policy during a campaign stop in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The policy includes increased investment in domestic defense manufacturing, increased salaries for members of the Canadian Armed Forces to boost recruitment, and a commitment to meet the 2% NATO spending target by 2030. “Our enemies have become bolder and our sovereignty is under threat,” he said.

New Democratic Party (NDP) Leader Jagmeet Singh:

Singh met with tenants in Toronto and stressed his party’s commitment to housing. He also criticized Pierre Poulivre for not getting a security clearance and not being serious about confronting threats to Canadian democracy. “If you care about the country, you should get a security clearance and get as much information as possible so that we can protect our country,” Singh said.

Foreign interference allegations:

A report in the Globe and Mail alleges that India interfered in the 2022 Conservative leadership election. The report says the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has found that Indian operatives in the South Asian community helped organize and raise funds for Pollyover. Pollyover has denied the allegations and said he won the leadership election fairly and transparently. As the election campaign continues, party leaders are traveling across the country to canvass support and present their policies and promises.
