Carney to discuss Trump auto tariffs at Ottawa rally; Live election updates

US President Donald Trump has imposed a 25 per cent tariff on cars and trucks made outside the US, which is likely to be the main focus of party leaders’ debate on the fifth day of the election campaign.

Liberal leader Mark Carney was due to campaign in Quebec today but cancelled his trip to Ottawa to meet with the Council on Canada-US Relations to discuss Canada’s response to the tariffs. Conservative leader Pierre Palvior will be in British Columbia today, while NDP leader Jagmeet Singh continues his campaign in Ontario.

Carney returns to Ottawa
Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended his campaign this morning to hold an emergency cabinet meeting to address Trump’s tariffs. On his way into parliament, he said he would provide a briefing after the meeting, when asked about his message to auto workers.

Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne stressed: “We are here to fight for Canadian workers and industry. These tariffs will also hurt American consumers.”

9:45 a.m.: Analyst: “You can’t steer the ship around Trump”
Political analyst Scott Reid said Trump has completely changed the election and leaders must prove they can manage this crisis. He pointed to the potential role of provinces such as Ontario and Alberta.

Singh heads to Windsor, heart of the auto industry
Jagmeet Singh traveled to Windsor instead of London to meet with union leaders and workers at the Stellantis plant. He called the tariffs “an attack on workers.”

Carney dedicates day to managing tariffs
Carney held an emergency cabinet meeting in Ottawa, canceling a trip to Quebec. Earlier, he was greeted by 1,650 people in Kitchener and promised $2 billion in support for the auto industry.
