Increasing "concerns" about violence related to car theft

Although they have made dozens of arrests and laid hundreds of charges against people, police say they are still seeing an "alarming increase" in carjacking-related violence.

As of September 21, 2023, the task force's efforts have resulted in 89 arrests, 554 charges and the seizure of 109 vehicles in metropolitan Toronto. In Toronto itself, police have arrested 40 people, charged 315 and seized 81 cars.

Police say the level of violence used in carjackings represents a "new threat". Although the number of car thefts in Toronto decreased in 2023 compared to the previous year, there is still an alarming increase in car theft-related violence, which the task force will address.

Last year, police received more than 300 reports of car thefts in metropolitan Toronto, more than 200 of which occurred in Toronto.
