Increase in hospitalizations in metropolitan Toronto hospitals due to covid-19 in 2024
With the number of Covid-19 hospitalizations on the rise, an emergency doctor in Toronto is urging people to get their covid-19 boosters and also get their children vaccinated against measles.
The doctor noted that many patients with Covid-19 have cold-like symptoms and may not realize they have the virus.
According to the Public Health Organization of Canada, only 16.9% of people 5 years and older have received their covid-19 booster dose.
The doctor also noted that some of the hospitalized patients had not received a booster dose for more than two years.
In addition to injecting a booster dose of Covid-19, doctors also emphasize the importance of vaccinating children against measles.
The Public Health Agency of Ontario has reported that immunization rates for seven-year-old children against the disease have dropped significantly in recent years.
In the 2019-2020 school year, the measles, mumps, and polio vaccination rate was about 85 percent, but that number dropped to 52 percent in the 2021-2022 school year.
