General Jenny Carignan is the first woman to be appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Army
General Jenny Carignan has been appointed as the new Commander of the Canadian Armed Forces. She is the first woman to be elected as the Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Army.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the news on Wednesday. Carignan, who currently serves as the Army's chief of professional conduct and culture, will replace General Wayne Eyre, who is set to retire this summer.
"Throughout his career, we have witnessed exceptional leadership qualities and commitment to service," Trudeau said in a news release. "I am confident that as the new commander of the Canadian military, he will help make Canada stronger, safer and more ready to meet global security challenges."
In 2008, she became the first woman to command a combat force in the Canadian military. During his 38-year military career, he has also been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
He has also received the Meritorious Service Medal and the Governor General's Military Merit Medal.
Carignan is scheduled to officially assume command of the armed forces on July 18 during a ceremony.
